Is color night vision better than infrared?

2024-10-28

1. Limitations of traditional night vision technology

Although traditional night-vision optical equipment has changed war, law enforcement and other activities since its emergence, the images produced by traditional night-vision optical equipment are mostly monochromatic, usually with a stereotypical green or black and white hue. This monochrome image cannot present the original true color of the object, making it difficult to distinguish between objects or signs of different colors in some scenes, which is not conducive to the accurate identification of the target. In low-light environments, even if a rough outline of the scene can be seen, it is difficult to determine many important details due to the lack of color information in the image. Also traditional night vision is susceptible to ambient light: traditional night vision technology has problems when the ambient light changes rapidly. When the ambient light suddenly brightens, the user may be “blinded” by the glare; and when the ambient light rapidly diminishes, there may be a brief loss of image.

2. Development of color night vision technology

Technical principle: Some high-end color night vision systems use highly sensitive digital Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) imaging sensors that convert photons into electrons, which are then decoded by algorithms to produce digital images. Lower-end technologies add filters to traditional image enhancement systems.

Application example: Our DT49 and DT69 night vision devices are equipped with high quality Sony sensors and chipsets that provide color images in low light conditions, replacing the black and white night vision mode of traditional night vision devices. Below are the pictures taken by DT49 in full color mode comparing with other traditional night vision devices In addition, DT69 also adds extra WiFi and GPS module, download the app and save video and picture files on your phone, so you can share them with others easily. The GPS module enables you to clearly mark your current location on the app, which is very good to improve the safety of outdoor sports. Also comes with portable design: supports helmet wear/head mount/tripod/neck strap/handle. Free your hands! Equipped with 200 meters + infrared detection range, 3W/850nm infrared LEDs, adjustable 7 levels of infrared light, allowing you to see your target clearly in the dark. Whether you are on safari, night patrol or security monitoring, it can provide you with reliable protection.

(As you can see from the picture in the dark environment, put our full-color night vision device and other night vision devices to shoot the same angle of the screen, our full-color night vision device can clearly shoot as if it were the daytime effect of the full-color picture)

Advantages of color night vision technology: conforms to human visual habits, faster mental processing of the information seen, reducing problems such as lack of situational awareness and vertigo. Helps to recognize target details more accurately, differentiate between friendly and hostile forces, etc. Fusion of images with other optical sensors can be more detailed and high fidelity. Provides the possibility of future cooperation with distributed vision systems, and improves night operation capability in military and civilian fields.

1. Conform to visual habits, faster processing: human visual habit is to see the world in color, color night vision technology provides color images more in line with this habit, so users can mentally process the information they see faster. In contrast, the monochrome images of traditional night vision technology may take the user more time and effort to interpret.

2. Reduced discomfort and improved situational awareness: Traditional night vision technology can sometimes lead to problems such as lack of situational awareness and vertigo, especially in airborne applications. The more “natural” visual effect of color night vision technology helps to reduce these problems, thus improving the user's overall situational awareness.

1. Potential for integration with other technologies

1. More detailed fused images: Color night vision technology can fuse images with infrared cameras, thermal imagers, or other types of optical sensors. Such fused images have the potential to be more detailed and high-fidelity, enabling the user to identify highly specific features and even, in some cases, to see text on objects. For example, fusing images from a color night vision camera with images from a thermal imaging system can provide a more complete picture by simultaneously acquiring color and temperature information about the target. Conventional night vision techniques may not be as effective at fusing in this regard as color night vision techniques.
